With teens, things move very fast. From their schedule to their mood. As I've raised my three teenage daughters the thing I've noticed is that, as I take time for me, I have more patience and time for my relationship with my teens. A The truer I am about who I am as a parent and a person the better I am at relating with my teens and my teens to me.
As parents our own upbringing can create blind-spots when it comes to the way we parent, especially through the teenage years. Those blind-spots can create misunderstanding and conflict where none is intended. Sometimes, as the adult, the person that needs the timeout the most is ourselves. So lets take a time out. Regroup, refocus and re-energize. Let's get some clarity around where our patience is thin or our defenses too thick. Let's reconnect to our purpose to prepare our children to be self-reliant, clear-thinking, drama-free adults. When they've got those three things going for them, happiness pretty much takes care of itself.
You'll always be mom but, you truly only get a few more years to parent. If you're spending more time arguing or avoiding each other than you are helping them to prepare to move from dependence to interdependence to independence as smoothly as possible then I invite you to take that time out to learn the tools needed to get you and your teen back on track and make the most of the time.

Rouben is a master yoga instructor, massage therapist and owner of Amenia Yoga Center. Retreat participants are invited into either his beginner yoga class or his intermediate yoga class on Saturday morning. When booked in advanced, deep tissue or Thai massages are available during the retreat (Fee for massage not included in pricing below)
